Many years ago my nephew had friends in Trinidad-Tobago....the couple came to the states for a visit and wanted to visit a farm.....we were happy for them to come. They were very knowledgeable of civil war history......we visited a civil war museum and enjoyed showing them a working farm.
The next morning I was cooking breakfast when Linda came into the kitchen carrying a small black book....she and her husband were side band radio enthusiasts. She opened the book and said that she regularly talked via radio to a man in the states. She told me the name (no last name) and part of the address she had. It was almost our address. I called the post office and explained the situation. Finally, I was given the name. It was our neighbor three farms up.
I phoned the man and said, " what would you say if I told you that the Linda that you talk to in Trinidad is standing in my kitchen?" He replied, "I'd say, Good God, woman, you don't mean it!"
Linda and I went to his home so that they could meet....quite a meeting.....what would the chances be of two people who talked on a radio half a world apart meeting? Whenever he talked to her after that he would call me to come talk with her........ Linda gave me a memento from Trinidad and when I think about it, it still blows my mind. I guess ham or side band radios were the prerequisite to blogging.....
